I’d like a clarification of these rules. I’ve been suicidal for years (and tried it), and I have quite a lot of knowledge about the most common methods of suicide.

One important thing to understand is that committing suicide is, in fact, extremely difficult. You are *much* more likely to end up with some permanent injuries.

So if someone says that they are considering killing themselves, is it ok to point this out to them? And if someone mentions a specific method that they are considering, is it okay to point out how low the chance of dying actually is and what the consequences will be instead? This sort of conversation may seem morbid, but to a suicidal person it is “normal” conversation considering the mind set they are in, and pointing out stuff like this might make them think about it again.

Members who are activily suicidal are not thinking in a rational way. They are often in a panic or feeling hopeless. Any sort of logical discussion is often lost on them. The correct course of action is to have them get to an emergency room as soon as possible. They need real time, face to face help and this is what we must urge them to do. Discussions about how their intended method won’t work could create frustration and further thoughts of self-harm. Starting a dialog about self-harm or their intended method is against our guidelines.

Although we deeply sympathize with those experiencing suicidal feelings or ideation, to protect the sensitivities of the greater majority of our members – and most importantly, for your safety – discussions and commentary regarding suicide, suicide ideation, self-harm, or threats of self-harm, are not allowed at this forum. If you experience such feelings or thoughts, you must contact your doctor or other suitable healthcare practitioner. You will find more information on our Suicide, Self-Harm & Threatening Behaviour webpage.

I don’t quite agree with that, and I would have a lot to add, but I don’t want to start an argument about this topic.

You may not agree with that but it is the rule of this forum. This forum has been around for a long time and these rules have been worked out and thought through. You certainly don’t need to agree with them. We don’t expect that. However, you do need to abide by them.
